During the summer of 2006, I travelled from Luanda to Maputo with public transport. Using machibombos, boats and trains, motorcycles and even a bicycle taxi I crisscrossed Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Malawi with the ultimate goal to end in Mozambique. In my travel bag: a huge box of disposable cameras.

Out of curiosity for everyday situations from Southern Africa, I asked people I met to take pictures from their daily life. Today, with the rise and popularity of the smartphone, it takes only a few clicks on Instagram to view vernacular photography from anywhere in the world. This was not the case in 2006. Few people in Angola or Mozambique ever took pictures at all.

I wrote on my blog: “The resulting photographs don’t have the frills we expect today from the most humble snaps in the age of photo sharing. They are neither mind blowing or extra ordinary from a photographic point of view. However, they show a genuine part of daily life from everyday people in Southern Africa, a view of substance over style which is genuinely refreshing in it’s honest simplicity.”
